Kaitiakitanga
“We do not own the land — we belong to it, and we must care for it.”
Kaitiakitanga is a Māori concept that is usually translated as guardianship, stewardship, or care for the environment, but its meaning is deeper than simple conservation.
The word comes from kaitiaki (guardian, protector, caretaker) and tanga (the practice or principle of something).
At its heart, kaitiakitanga is the responsibility to protect and care for the natural world — land, rivers, forests, oceans, and wildlife — for current and future generations.
In Māori worldview, people are not separate from nature. Humans are part of a connected living system that includes:
- whenua (land)
- awa (rivers)
- moana (sea)
- ngahere (forest)
- ancestors and future descendants
Because of this connection, there is both a spiritual and practical duty to maintain balance and respect.
Examples of kaitiakitanga include:
- protecting sacred or important natural areas
- sustainable fishing and harvesting
- restoring rivers or wetlands
- planting native trees
- caring for wildlife habitats
- limiting use of resources so future generations can benefit
